For our first installment of the Did You Know series I wanted to let you in on some facts and pointers with your filters that you may not know.
Ductless Heat Pumps
Ductless systems are unusual because they do not have a furnace filter cabinet and typical filters, instead they have a small mesh filter inside each head. Luckily these filters do not have to be replaced very often like their furnace counterparts, but they do need to be removed and cleaned every two to four weeks. If they are not cleaned they will start restricting airflow and also spitting out dirt and dust into your home.
To clean your ductless heat pump filter remove the front cover of your wall mounted head unit and slide the mesh filter out and wipe it off. I do not recommend using water on your filter unless you will clean and dry the filter completely. If you must, lightly use a vacuum to remove all the dust and debris. Place the filter back in the head unit and attach the cover.
It is recommended to annually replace the filter in your ductless head unit. The replacement filters for these systems tend to be quite inexpensive (usually under $50). You can find replacement filters at your local home improvement store or online. Make sure you buy the specific filter model number that you currently have, preferably from the manufacturer of your system. Using 3rd party filters can void your system warranty and also affect the performance of your system negatively.
Furnace filters are easy to maintain because there is no way clean them, instead you have to replace your filter. Each filter has a specific MERV Rating that specifies how well it filters particulates and also has a specific period that it is affective and needs to be replaced. Most filters you can buy at your local hardware or home improvement stores need to be replaced every two to four months depending on a few factors. If you have pets you need to replace filters more frequently, but if you have a duct cleaning then you can replace your filter less frequently. Your local heating and air conditioning company can also supply filters that last four to six months and a year. These filters will not only last longer, but remove more contaminates and dirt in your air. More on Vancouver, WA furnace filters.
