improve efficiency-ducted heating and cooling system

A ducted heating and cooling system can be a significant investment so it’s important to get as many years as possible from it. The key is making sure your system is running efficiently.  Not only will a highly efficient system keep your system running longer, but it will also help your wallet in the meantime by lowering your utility bills. Plus, an efficient system is less likely to have heating issues in the middle of a cold winter weather spell.

Cold fronts and heat waves are usually the busiest times for HVAC residential service companies. It may take longer than normal to get a service technician out to fix your heating or cooling issue. Keeping your system well maintained and efficient lowers your chances of being one of the customers calling because of a system not heating or cooling during peak season.

  1. Keep units and vents clear

This is a simple way to improve efficiency without spending any money. Make sure to keep your indoor vents clear and move any furniture or items that may be blocking them. Your outdoor unit also needs to be cleared of any snow, leaves or debris blocking it.

  1. Change your air filter

Dirty air filters cause your ducted heating and cooling system to running harder than normal. Make sure to change your air filters every 1-6 months depending on the type of filter you have or when dirt is present. You can purchase filters at our office, which is located at 6109 NE Hwy 99 Vancouver, WA 98665. Our office hours are Monday-Friday from 8am to 4pm.

  1. Use a programmable thermostat

Programmable thermostats allow you to set a schedule for your heating and cooling system. Turning your heat down in the winter and/or cooling down in the summer while you are away at work and/or school during the day allows you to save money and energy. It is recommended that you turn down the thermostat 7-10 degrees during the winter and turn up your thermostat 7-10 degrees during the summer while you are away.

  1. Schedule a maintenance

Regular maintenance is imperative for keeping a system running well during the cold winter months and hot summer months. In fact over 90% of mechanical breakdowns are due to dirt, which can be avoided with maintenance. We recommend having an annual maintenance; an annual maintenance also keeps your warranties valid. Our club members receive a free annual maintenance as well as discounts on repairs, duct cleaning, duct sealing and filters.

  1. Duct cleaning and sealing

Dirt and dust that builds up in your ducted heating and cooling system can force your system to work harder than it should due to blocked air flow as well as cause and/or aggravate health problems such as allergies and asthma. It is recommended that you get your ducts cleaned every 5-7 years.

It is estimated that on average homes lose 20-40% of it’s heated and/or air conditioned air through the duct work. Having your duct work sealed insures higher efficiency and lower utility bills.
